Abstract
This dissertation is a contribution to the design of rubble mound breakwaters.
In the first part a method for slope stability analysis of rubble mound breakwaters is presented. A sensitivity analysis showed the paramount importance of the pore water pressures along a potential slip surface: they are as important or even more important than the shear resistance characteristics. In the presented method the volume of soil and rock above a potential slip surface is considered; pore pressures on the boundaries of this volume are determined separately. In the subsoil below the seabottom, pore pressures are changing due to tide- and wave action. A handsome tool to take into account the influence of wave-attack on the pore pressures in the foundation layers is the wave influence depth hID, which - for saturated soils - depends predominantly on the wave period T and the permeability k and modulus of elasticity Eoed of the subsoil.

In the second part a new armour unit - the HARO - is presented. This unit can be used on all types of maritime protection structures. The HARO attemps to satisfy three basic objectives: structural strength, high porosity of the armour layer and high hydraulic stability.

An exhaustive hydraulic investigation showed a stability coefficient KD comparable to that of the dolos.
Static and dynamic loading tests and pendulum tests on the site confirm the adequate structural performance.
A qualitative and quantitative comparison with other types of armour units, such as grooved cubes, tetrapods, dolosse and accropods shows the technical and economical value of the HARO.
