Abstract
    Candidate concepts for ship-board autonomous vehicle operations often involve deployment and recovery over the stern of the host ship. The flow in this region, even at slow speeds, can be violent at the length scale of the autonomous service craft, potentially leading to unacceptable motions. We investigate motions of a small, deployed craft as it approaches the host ship under a range of scenarios, including sea states and wave incidence. Both vehicles respond to ambient conditions and are controlled by autopilots. The CFD code CFDShip-Iowa is used for the computations, which is a semicoupled two-phase level set RANS/DES solver with extensive motion and multi-ship interaction capabilities. The objective of the study is to obtain conditions under which safe operation is achieved throughout the time history of the approach. Results include trajectories, time histories of motions and velocity fields, as well as analysis of the physical processes that lead to dangerous conditions.
