De unité d'Océanographie Chimique komt voort uit het laboratoire d'Océanologie en werd in 1996 een zelfstandige onderzoekseenheid binnen het département d'Astrophysique, Géophysique et Océanographie. Later werd de eenheid onderdeel van de Freshwater and Oceanic Science Unit of Research (FOCUS). Deze onderzoekseenheid verenigt tien laboratoria van de Université de Liège die zich bezighouden met oceanografie en limnologie en integreert multidisciplinaire wetenschappelijke expertise over aquatische systemen. De onderzoeksgroep bestudeert biogeochemische cycli in oceanen, kustzones en estuaria, van tropische tot polaire omgevingen, met de nadruk op broeikasgassen zoals CO2, CH4, N2O en dimethylsulfide (DMS). Tot de belangrijkste gebeurtenissen sinds de oprichting van de groep behoren een publicatie in het gerenommeerde tijdschrift 'Science' over de CO2-emissie van Europese estuaria (Frankignoulle et al, 1998 - Science), een publicatie over de eerste synthese van CO2-fluxen in kustmilieus (Borges, 2005 - Estuaries), een publicatie over de eerste schattingen van gasuitwisseling tussen zeeijs en de atmosfeer (Delille et al., 2007 - Limnology and Oceanography) en de eerste metingen van CO2-fluxen door eddy-covariantie op Antarctisch zee-ijs.
Op marien en estuarien gebied verricht deze groep onderzoek naar de biogeochemie van verschillende systemen, zoals het Schelde-estuarium, de Belgische kustzone, de Noordzee, de Golf van Biskaje, upwellingsystemen aan de Iberische kust, de Middellandse Zee, mangrove-ecosystemen, tropische estuaria, zee-ijs (Arctisch en Antarctisch) en de Zuidelijke Oceaan. Er worden ook biogeochemische studies uitgevoerd op coccolithoforen, Posidonia oceanica-weiden en macrofyten in kusthabitats. De groep bestudeert ook de effecten van oceaanverzuring op de mariene biogeochemie, de globale synthese van CO2-fluxen in continentale platen en de globale synthese van CO2- en CH4-fluxen in estuaria. In de toekomst zal de groep het onderzoek naar broeikasgassen voortzetten, met bijzondere nadruk op het opstellen van langetermijntijdreeksen.
De onderzoeksgroep werkt samen met enkele gerenommeerde nationale en internationale universiteiten en instituten zoals de Vrije Universiteit Brussel, de KU Leuven, de Université Libre de Bruxelles (België), Bordeaux-I (Frankrijk), het Koninklijk Nederlands Instituut voor Onderzoek der Zee (NIOZ) en de Dalhousie-universiteit (Canada). De onderzoeksgroep neemt ook deel aan verschillende mariene onderzoeksprojecten, zoals het Europese COCOS-project (ter verbetering van de uitwisseling van datasets tussen projecten), CARBO-OCEAN (betreffende een geïntegreerde beoordeling van mariene koolstofbronnen en -putten), PEACE (rol van pelagische verkalking en export van carbonaatproductie in klimaatverandering) en het CANOPY-project (ter beoordeling van de potentiële rol van de Zuidelijke Bocht van de Noordzee en de sterk verontreinigde estuariene pluimen, als bronnen of putten van atmosferisch kooldioxide). |
