Abstract
Egg ash weight as percent of dry matter was associated with fertilization and hatching rates in haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus). Eggs with low ash (<20%) were characterized by a higher fertilization rate and higher hatching rate than eggs with greater than or equal to 20%. There was no correlation between egg quality (i.e., fertilization and hatching success) and percent dry matter, lipid or fatty acid composition. Egg batches with low hatching rates (<5%) generated larvae that died sooner under starvation conditions than progeny originating from eggs with high hatch rates (>85%). Certain spawning pairs outperformed others and consistently yielded eggs characterized by high fertilization and high hatching rates.
