Abstract
Clear phase-response curves were obtained, describing the differential phase-shifts of a circannual rhythm of reproduction following changes in photoperiod at monthly intervals throughout the year. This provides the strongest evidence so far that reproduction in salmonids is ultimately under endogenous circannual control. The results also support the hypothesis that the circannual clock mechanism can be dissociated from the neuroendocrine mechanisms controlling maturation; this is consistent with a 'gating' model, whereby fish mature in a particular year only if they have reached a certain threshold stage of reproductive development while the circannual clock is at a specific (gate-open) phase of the circannual cycle. The observation that the spawning rhythm may split into two components under certain conditions raises the possibility that the circannual system in rainbow trout is composed of two or more separate oscillators
