Abstract
The objective of this study was to characterize the reproductive seasonality of a wild population of the Florida gar, Lepisosteus platyrhincus. We measured gonadosomatic indices (GSI); plasma estradiol (E sub(2)), testosterone (T), and vitellogenin (Vtg) concentrations; and follicle diameters in the females. In males, we measured GSI, plasma T, and seminiferous tubule areas (STA). Additionally, the reproductive stages of both sexes were determined. We observed a seasonal pattern in the reproduction in both females and males. Following a quiescent period in the summer, there was an increase in sex steroid hormones during the fall, leading to the onset of vitellogenesis or active spermatogenesis. These data indicate that the majority of females spawned during the early spring followed by a general decrease in reproductive parameters of both sexes to summer levels.
