Abstract
Oocyte growth, fecundity regulation, and condition effects on fecundity for repeat spawners of Norwegian spring spawning herring were examined using periodically collected samples from July 1998 to February/March 1999. As early as July more than half of the examined fish had started vitellogenesis. Oocyte diameter increased linearly over time. Fecundity decreased from July to January by around 60% and both prevalence and average intensity of atresia were very high in October and November. Oocytes were most frequently found to be atretic at the size of 800 to 1000 µm when incorporation of lipid and solids (protein, ash and carbohydrates) also speeded up. Fecundity was strongly controlled by fish condition after October. Solids (protein) appeared to be essential in determining fecundity.
