Abstract
The availability of water, in liquid form, is one of the essential metabolic requirements for almost all forms of life, from the simplest unicelled organism up to the human race. Unlike other creatures, however, human being have the intellectual capacity to utilize far more water than is required for mere survival, and dedicates this excess to various purposes relating to such things as personal comforts (e.g. air conditioning), hygiene (e.g. washing, bathing), industrial processes (e.g. paper manufacture, food preparation, mining operations, petrochemicals), agriculture (e.g. irrigation and livestock watering), and hydropower (e.g. electricity production).
