Abstract
    The MUSORSTOM 8 cruise was carried out in the Vanuatu Archipelago from 19 September to 14 October 1994. 186 samples were made by dredging and trawling in the upper-bathyal zone, on the slope of the islands and on the top of the Bougainville guyot. Extensive areas suitable for trawling were discovered between 300 and 1000 m. The benthic fauna is rich, diverse but forms quite different assemblages from those of New Caledonia: sponges and stylasterids, in particular, do not contribute significantly to the biomass.
