Abstract
The first outbreak of paralytic shellfish poisoning at Guatemala occurred on the Pacific coast in July 1987 accompanied by large blooms of Pyrodinium bahamense var. compressum. There were 187 cases, of which 26 were fatal. It was recommended to carry out a permanent monitoring program of shellfish toxicity levels and initiate a public education program.
