Abstract
The amplitude of variation of temperature, salinity, porewater content, and redox-potential in exposed and sheltered sandy beaches were measured on stations in transects perpendicular to the shore line. A decrease in amplitude from the exposed to the sheltered beach, from upper to lower intertidal, and from the surface to deeper sediment layers was found. The diversity of the nematode fauna in these stations increases in the same direction. In the case of the exposed beach linear regression analysis gives for the correlation between diversity (H) and % maximal variation of temperature r super(2) = 0.921, for salinity 0.598, for pore- water content 0.599, and the mean % maximal variation 0.835. Diversity thus proves to be correlated to the amplitude of variation in physical parameters in accordance with the stability time hypothesis (Sanders 1968).
