Abstract |
The effect of interspecific competitions within the genus Tisbe has been studied. In one set of experiments binary combinations of 4 species were tested with the result that, in the course of one generation, T. holothuriae eliminated all other species. T. dilatata eliminated T. clodiensis and T. reticulta. The latter 2 species were able to live together indefinitely. In a 2nd set of experiments, restricted to T. holothuriae and T. clodiensis, the interactions of both larval stages and adult were compared: the lethal effect appeared to be related to the adults. It is suggested that elimination of a competing species in such a short time might be due to the production of a toxic metabolite by the dominating species. The possible ecological and selective value of this phenomenon is discussed. |
