Abstract |
In crossbreeding experiments between T. clodiensis and another morphologically nearly identical form, both occurring sympatrically in Anzio (Italy), it was found that the 2 populations exhibit completed sexual isolation. They are, therefore, regarded as sibling species, T. clodiensis Battaglia and Fava and T. dobzhanskii new species. Living animals of T. clodiensis are characterized by the presence of 2 violet spots: one on the cephalothorax, the other on the first free thoracic segment. These are lacking in T. dobzhanskii. In dead specimens, distinctiveness can be substantiated by means of biometrical analysis of the first antenna and of the fifth leg in the female. Studies on life cycle and population dynamics reveal several differences and a clear superiority of T. dobzhanskii, when raised under standard laboratory conditions. The differences in the results of crossbreeding experiments between geographically distant populations and the geographic distribution are discussed. |
