Abstract
The microbial changes and the chemical fate of oil in an intertidal sediment were followed after an experimental oil spill. In order to test the effect of different chemical treatments on the biodegradation of stranded oil a basic experimental design of four field test sites was established. Oil contamination of the sediments resulted in an initial decrease in bacterial numbers of both total heterotrophs and hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria followed by a marked bacterial growth. No agreement between degradation rates estimated on the basis of mineralization of 14C-hexadecane and bacterial counts could be observed. The concentration of oil in the oiled sediments did not vary considerably during the experimental period of ten months. The microbial results obtained in this study for the untreated and the dispersant treated test plots did not show any enhancement of the biodegradation by the chemical treatments employed.
