Abstract
    The flux of carbon and nitrogen through a salmon sea-cage farm has been quantified and the amounts of waste related to changes in the benthos and water column of a fjordic Scottish sealoch. In the immediate vicinity of the farm and up to a distance of 15m, the sediment was highly reductive and the water overlying the sediment was depleted in oxygen. There was an azoic zone directly beneath and up to the edge of the cages and an impoverished macrofauna dominated by Capitella capitata up to a distance of 3m. Localized hypernutrification of the water column was observed around the farm but there was no evidence of an enhancement in phytoplankton standing crop. These results have been used to formulate simple modes to predict the scale of effect of salmon farming in a given location. The models are presented and their use in site selection and for determining the holding capacity of a water body are discussed.
