Abstract
The aim of the study was to increase the rearing quality of the trout Salmo gairdneri Richardson by application of the natural dynamic quality of running water. Physical and biological culture parameters were thoroughly controlled during several months and 12 000 data were collected in two series of experiments involving 10 000 newly hatched trout. Fish were sampled weekly during the rearing period in order to perform a morphometric analysis of the body musculature using photon microscope. The rearing in fast water provided several advantages: 1) the permanent self-cleansing greatly improved the sanitary conditions; 2) the mortality rate was significantly reduced, particularly during the hatching period; 3) the available space was optimally occupied and the rearing density increased up to 100%; 4) the growth was similar when compared with other systems, but a positive effect of the forced swimming on muscle volume was observed.
