Abstract |
In its country of origin, the madai or Japanese red sea bream (Chrysophrys major) is one of the most widely reared and demanded species in the market because of its superior meat quality. The enormous development in production using intensive farming methods has occurred during the last 10 years, and has coincided with the setting up of reproduction and breeding technology. A stock of eggs still in the embryonic stage and also one of newly hatched fish of O.40g, mean weight have been successfully imported from Japan in 1986. The hatching of the eggs and the rearing of the newly hatched fish has demonstrated the excellent adaptability of the species to the environmental conditions in the southern part of Italy. With a hatching rate of 50% young madai reached a mean weight of 28g after 6 months. In 1987 the rearing of young fish will be continued and the culturing of the larval stage will be repeated. |
