Abstract
Amberjack (Seriola dumerilii, Carangidae) can be considered a very suitable species for intensive aquaculture for two important reasons: rapid growth rate and high commercial value. The knowledge of fish biology (ecology and ethology) and of feeding habits is fundamental in order to intensively rear a species. The paper presents results of a feeding trial on amberjack fingerlings reared in tanks. Two experimental diets (A and B) based on low cost food such as fishing scraps and chicken giblets were tested. Diet A was based on fish (Trachurus trachurus) and chicken liver; diet B was based on fish (Trachurus trachurus) and supplemented with vitamins and mineral salts. The result showed that the best growth rate was obtained with diet B (Trachurus trachurus + vitamins and mineral salts). During the trial no infection or mortality was recorded.
