Abstract
    Mussels (Mytilus edulis) living at different intertidal levels (viz. about 40, 10 and 0% of time exposed to the air) were compared as to length distribution, meat and shell weight, and linear dimensions. The long-exposed mussels were found to be on average smaller, to contain less meat, to have heavier shells and a more blunt shape than the lower-living ones. The mussels were found to grow allometrically: their width increases faster than their height, especially at the higher intertidal levels.
