Abstract:
De vakgroep Morfologie bestudeert de lichaamsbouw van dieren, vooral deze van huisdieren, paarden, nutsdieren voor de voedselproductie (incl. aquacultuur) en mariene dieren waaronder zeevissen en ongewervelden. De wetenschappelijke expertise wordt ten dienste gesteld van de gemeenschap door het inrichten van cursussen en het verstrekken van dienstverlenende adviezen aan dierenartsen, clinici en onderwijs- en onderzoeksinstellingen in binnen- en buitenland.

De vakgroep is onderverdeeld in drie eenheden, met name de groepen 'Anatomie', 'Histologie' en 'Embryologie'. De onderzoeksprojecten binnen de vakgroep Morfologie concentreren zich rond volgende thema's:
  • tonsillaire immunomorfologie;
  • anatomie van het bloedvatenstelsel;
  • mechanismen van angiogenese tijdens de embryonale ontwikkeling;
  • aquatische diergeneeskunde.


Binnen de onderzoekslijn 'aquatische diergeneeskunde' komen o.a. de volgende mariene topics aan bod:
  • maagdarmontwikkeling van mariene vislarven;
  • interacties tussen micro-organismen met probiotische werking/prebiotica aan de ene kant en de gastheer (larven van mariene vissoorten (zeebaars (Dicentrarchus labrax)/tong (Solea solea)) en nauplii van het pekelkreeftje) aan de andere kant. Immers, het gebruik van pro- en prebiotica wint nog steeds aan populariteit in de aquacultuur ondanks het feit dat de exacte werkwijze ervan bij larven nagenoeg nog niet gekend is. Er is bijgevolg een hoge wetenschappelijke maar ook praktische interesse in het ontrafelen van de gastheer-microbiële interacties in de vroege larvale fase.


De vakgroep Morfologie werkt samen met het Artemia Reference Center (UGent) en de afdeling Pathologie, Bacteriologie en Pluimveeziekten (UGent). De vakgroep Morfologie maakt ook deel uit van het UGent Aquaculture R&D consortium en het Marine@UGent consortium.

Het Morfologie Museum maakt eveneens deel uit van deze vakgroep. Het museum beheert een didactische en een onderzoekscollectie in de vergelijkende morfologie van gewervelden. De nadruk ligt op de museumstukken van klassieke huisdieren, paarden en nutsdieren. Het museum heeft uitgebreide expertise in conserveringstechnieken van organische specimens en focust op eenduidige protocollen met betrekking tot conservatietechnieken van zoogdierskeletten in natuurlijke historische collecties, en dit in nauwe samenwerking met de Operationele Directie Natuur en Milieu (KBIN). Het museum is verder betrokken bij de recovery en de conservatie van gestrande zeezoogdieren langs de Belgische kust.
