Abstract
The hypothesis that forms the basis of debate for this paper is that in order for the aquaculture industry to achieve its growth potential in terms of consumer and public acceptance then it must establish participatory fora that adopt open and transparent discussions on the current and future issues surrounding sustainable development. Fundamental to this goal is effective communication of easy-to-digest information. Also, interested parties should be given the option to be involved in the development of recommendations. The paper recommends among others the following measures: (1) Full adoption of the Integrated Coastal Zone Management Strategy, based on a multidisciplinary framework and extended peer-reviews; (2) More openness and debate, including the broadening of perspectives, regarding the issues of sustainability and food safety; (3) The wider use of various participatory mechanisms on different levels, e.g. through national consensus conferences.
