Abstract
Various approaches to the theory of turbulent diffusion are reviewed and limitations of the analogy with molecular diffusion are pointed out. The main features of turbulent motion in the sea are discussed, including the lack of isotropy between horizontal and vertical components and the dependence of the latter on stability. Another important feature is that the input of energy takes place at several widely different scales and this affects the form of the energy spectrum and the dependence of the diffusive processes on scale. The basic equation for the turbulent mixing of a substance in the sea involves the covariances between turbulent velocity components and fluctuations of concentration. In order to bring it into a manageable form, the idea of an eddy diffusivity tensor has to be introduced, but the limited validity of this concept should be kept in mind.
