Abstract
    The percent motility of spermatozoa when diluted with 450 mM NaCl increased or decreased with K super(+) and HCO sub(3) super(-) ion concentrations in the isotonic incubation medium. Acquisition and loss of the potential for motility could be induced several times by varying the medium K super(+) and HCO sub(3) super(-) ion concentration. Percent motility of demembranated spermatozoa increased with increasing K super(+) concentration and raised pH of activating solution. Thus, the high extracellular concentrations of both ions are important to raise intracellular K super(+) concentration and intracellular pH under hyperosmotic conditions.
