Abstract
    To examine whether environmental factors may influence sexual maturation, broodstock matrincha were maintained either in ponds or in an enclosure within a natural small stream (igarape). The peak in testosterone levels in fish maintained in the igarape occurred one month later, and was approximately five times higher, than in fish held in ponds. Fertilization rate of eggs produced by hormonal induction was 75% in fish selected from the igarape, but zero in fish from the ponds.
