Abstract
Biological and environmental data from the hake surveys (1986-1997) were used to investigate the spatial distribution of spawning Cape hakes. Spawning fish were found on both the West and South coasts of South Africa, and were most prevalent at 50-250 m depth. At this depth the mean bottom-temperature and -oxygen concentration ranged from 9.10-9.86 degree C and 3.23-4.27 ml/L, respectively. Gonadosomatic indices varied seasonally, with spawning fish present in all seasons.
