Abstract
Waves generated by passing vessels are a significant issue for mooring in modern port waterways and for the protection of river banks. To simulate passing-vessel effects, it is in many situations necessary to take the effect of a complex geometry and non-uniform bottom into account. This study aims to evaluate the use of a time-domain Boussinesq-type wave model to predict ship-induced waves over a non-uniform bathymetry. The Boussinesq-type wave model TRITON has been used for the simulations. The numerical model has been validated using scale-model test data obtained at Flanders Hydraulics Research. After validation, we evaluate two methods to generate a wave signal at the model boundary representing ship-induced waves in the Boussinesq-type model. These methods use a simple approach based on the main dimensions of the passing vessel.
