Abstract
The majority of females of Sparus aurata released eggs either after hormonal or photoperiodic treatment although a few spawned spontaneously. Lower doses of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) produced better results in terms of both higher percentage of viable eggs and hatching rate. The photoperiodic treatment seems to have the advantage over hormone dosing at the levels investigated. The proportion of viable eggs, the hatching rate and the survival rate after 60 days were all highest when the females spawned spontaneously. The larvae were fed initially with the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis, and from the 12th day to the 30th day with Artemia naupli. From that age on, artifcial food was used.
