Abstract
The results obtained with semi-intensive farming and controlled reproduction in captivity of Penaeus monodon (Fabricius), carried out in a fish farm placed in the south of Italy, are described. In May 1990 a stock of 100,000 PL15 of Penaeus monodon, produced in a Malayan hatchery, was reared for 1 month using two circular fiberglass tanks (10 000 l each). After grading, the bigger ones (26 000 juveniles, body weight 0.3g), were stocked in an earthen pond (2500m2) with a final production of 320kg of shrimps (1 280k.ha-1; mean body weight 15.1g, FCR 3.9:1). A stock of 230 subadults (mean body weight 24.0g, sex ratio F:M 1.5:1) was picked out of the crop and stocked (density 4.4ind.m-2) in a concrete tank with sand bottom and recirculating water system, placed in a greenhouse. When females reached a mean body weight >60g (mean body weight of males 45g), they were subjected to unilateral eyestalk ablation and 12 animals spawned a total of 1 283 000 not viable eggs (107000 eggs/spawning). In July 1991 breeders were stocked in an earthen pond (15Om2) and in September 1991 one unilaterally ablated female (125.0g body weight) spawned 110000 eggs with a hatching percentage of 31.8%.
