Abstract
Intensive microalgal cultures grown on pig manure were carried out in 700l tanks to improve simple technologies easily transferable in the field. Many nuisances appear in the algal "reactor". Phytoplankton production decreased during winter more in relation with low temperatures than by short photoperiod. It is necessary that cultures are not carried out in the neighbourhood of trees to limit problems due to leaves decay. Absence of mixing entailed algae floatation, mainly during spring, and also caused cell sedimentation which induced anoxic conditions. Culture mixing, even in an intermittent way, seems to be necessary. Rotifer proliferation (up to 10 000 ind.l-1) held responsible for the collapse of the algal population seems to be a consequence rather than a cause of this collapse. The main aim of the work carried out at the Museum is the preparation of experiments on a pilot plant.
