Abstract
    This paper describes a project involving over sixty people. A research review was produced for the Sefton dune coast and progress was made towards the development of a research strategy. Prior to the project, a lot of the relevant information was little known, and often data had not been collated, analysed or evaluated for potential use by managers. A seminar was organised mainly around six review papers and a discussion paper produced by teams of researchers and managers. Other relevant papers were presented. Discussions of research priorities were held during the seminar and on a subsequent field visit. We consider that the following factors, among others, affected the success of the project: 1. Close co-operation and good working relationships already existed among managers involved in an active Coast Management Scheme, and also amongst several researchers and managers. 2. The idea to publish the research review may have increased co-operation, especially from researchers under pressures to publish their work. 3. By confining the seminar to one day and by keeping the seminar fee low (covering just the direct costs), the demands on people's time and money was minimised. Some examples of management concerns and related research areas are given. We believe that the approach adopted for the Sefton coast may be of use to other managers with similar concerns.
