Abstract
A sequence of geomorphological events may be identified following both the closure of the exit to Tacumshin Lake in southeast Ireland, and the Salinas River mouth in central California. This sequence includes the development of coastal dunes, initially as back barrier shadow dunes, forming on an active washover flat. These progressively coalesce to form a hummocky dunefield. Later, continued aggradation of the barrier leads to the exclusion of washover activity, as the locus of aeolian deposition switches to the beach crest. Eventually, if the sediment supply fails, the barrier crest may breakdown towards a mobile dunefield. The study emphasises the adventitious and strategic nature of foredunes, with in the framework of longer-term coastal changes.
