Abstract
The ability of the bathyscaph Trieste to remain in one location for a protracted period of time afforded the unique opportunity to view and photograph the benthonic organisms in the San Diego Trough off Southern California. Both direct visual and photographic observations were made. Through time-lapse photography it has been possible to determine (a) water currents which varied in speed between 0.02 and 0.06 knots, and in direction from 335° to 040°; (b) that 20% of a large brittle star population ( Ophiomusium lymani and Amphilepis sp.)moved over a 44-min period and (c) that they moved in random directions, with speeds of 0.7 to 3.4 cm/min. Underwater photography revealed that the sea floor may be likened to a moving carpet, with a variety of organisms crawling on the surface.
