Abstract |
The authors report the find of juvenile Sphenia binghami Turton, 1822 attached to the shell of a common wentletrap Epitonium clathrus (Linnaeus, 1758) caught alive during September 1975 off De Panne, Belgium. The specimens were attached with their byssus in the suture between the body whorl and the penultimate whorl. S. binghami is thought to be rare in Belgian marine waters but recent research revealed that the species is not uncommon in suitable habitats such as the fouling communities (mussel, hydroids, Pomatoceros reefs…) on buoys, wrecks and boulders. However, the species is never present in large numbers. The species is often confused withHiatella arctica (Linnaeus, 1767), co-occurring in the same biotopes and possibly also with juvenile Mya truncata (Linnaeus, 1758) and M. arenaria (Linnaeus, 1758). This may explain part of the records of S. binghami<:i> from soft bottom macrobenthic habitats in Belgian marine waters. |
