Abstract
This paper explores the possibility of using radar backscatter from the sea surface as a measure of the waves present. Wave profiles read from stereo-photographs of the waves, obtained on a ship, are reduced to statistics of a kind that may be compared with radar backscatter measured simultaneously. The wave statistic are also compared with model tank data. It appears, from these preliminary experiments, that good correlation can be obtained between wave and radar statistics; the best statistic for correlation remains to be determined. The uniqueness of correlation will depend on further analysis in different states of sea.
