Abstract
Oceanic giant squids, such as Architeuthis, usually attract laymen's interest because of their gigantic size. However, no utilization of them has ever been attempted. Other large squids belonging to the families Thysanoteuthidae and Ommastrephidae, including "jumbo squid", are objects of fisheries exploitation, because of their large biomass and good quality of flesh. To secure rational utilization of wild stocks and to enhance production, more intensive fisheries-biological studies on every species are desired. Over such a boundless oceanic habitat, genetic structure, microevolution, supra-/infra-specific variabilities, phylogeny and other basic biological aspects should be worked out with modern techniques under international and interdisciplinary scientific networks.
