Abstract
The distribution, biology , ecological connections, and fisheries of the squid Berryteuthis magister (Berry, 1913) are reviewed. This species is the only gonatid squid fished commercially, and consequently its biology is known better than that of the other Gonatidae. The following aspects are treated briefly: size, horizontal and vertical distributions, diurnal vertical migrations, maturation, ontogenetic descent, mating, spawning, fecundity , population structure, age, growth, life cycle, horizonta1 migrations, underwater observations, behavioural responses to meteorological and oceanographic factors, food and feeding, predators, parasites, assessed biomass and its inter-annual dynamics, fisheries, and fishery prospects.
