Abstract
Pre-Aptian Lower Cretaceous ammonites occur in two distinct realms, Tethyan and Boreal. Migration of ammonites between and within the realms was episodic and clearly linked to long- and short-term changes in sea-level. Long-term falls in sea-level provided barriers to migration and resulted in a decrease in diversity at family/subfamily level. Diversity and migration increased as sea-level rose through late Berriasian to Hauterivian times. During this interval the episodic nature of migration is clearly linked with short-term sea-level rises. Often the migrant faunas became extinct quickly, but at times they diversified rapidly to produce thriving new evolutionary lineages by allopatric speciation. Some of the most important levels of faunal turnover occur at these horizons.
