Abstract
The feeding ecology of juvenile meagre, Argyrosomus regius, was studied in order to determine the potential for competition with other fish species within the nursery areas of the Tagus estuary. The stomach contents of 274 individuals revealed that juvenile meagre had a low prey diversity: the major prey items being Mysidacea and the shrimp, Crangon crangon. The importance of larger prey items in the diet, namely Decapoda and Teleostei, increased with fish size. The dietary overlap between meagre and seabass, Dicentrarchus labrax, is high in the Tagus estuary but the competition between the two species is probably minimized by a different use of the habitat.
