Abstract
At the Banyuls Workshop in December 1995, we described a 3D reconstruction volume obtained from Riftia pachyptila haemoglobin observed in vitreous ice in transmission electron microscopy (de Haas et al., 1996). In addition, we compared this volume to those of Macrobdella decora (achaete), Lumbricus terrestris (oligochaete) haemoglobins and of Eudistylia vancouverii (polychaete) chlorocruorin. All the reconstruction volumes had resolutions close to 40 Angstrom and exhibited very similar general architectures. Specifically, all the molecules had the same chirality with the vertices of the upper hexagonal layer 16 degree rotated clockwise around the 6-fold axis. Since that time, F. de Haas reconstructed the haemoglobin of another polychaete worm, Alvinella pompejana, collected during the Hero'2 expedition.
