Abstract
The annelide Polydora ciliata presents two particularities: it is able perforate the rock and cover it with "mud" during the end of winter and spring-time. The origin of this mud and its relation with recruitment is assessed on the basis of a study of mud level, demography and colonisation of virgin rock. The mud is produced by adults, and the larvae settle preferably on substrates covered with mud.
