Abstract
During the "Hydronaut" cruise, at 13 degree N on the East Pacific Rise, invertebrates, hydrothermal waters, rocks and immersed surfaces were sampled by the submersible "Nautile" and processed aboard the mother-ship "Nadir" for bacteriological analysis. Bacteria involved in nitrogen and sulfur cycles, non specific heterotrophs, and heavy metal resistant bacteria were enriched from the various samples. All the searched metabolisms were detected after incubation under different conditions of temperature and pressure. However, results are different, according to the origin of the samples. The Polychaete Alvinella and its tube appeared to the most diversified microenvironment, and this is in agreement with previous electron microscope observations.
