Abstract
Coupled circulation-biological models provide a framework for integrating and synthesizing information about estuarine systems and for investigating hypotheses about controlling processes in these systems. Therefore, it is , appropriate to briefly review some existing circulation-biological models that have been developed for estuarine systems. A selection of models that consider larval transport and dispersion, whole-ecosystem dynamics, and population dynamics of specific species are discussed in terms of their basic structure. Emphasis is placed on potential model shortcomings as a basis for recommending improvements to future models. These discussions highlight the need for circulation-biological models that are integrated with a range of observation systems and visualization techniques. It is through such systems that estuarine synthesis will be accomplished.
