Abstract
Celleporina hassallii (Johnston, 1847) and Celleporina costazii (Audouin, 1826) have long been considered to have a wide distribution in warm and temperate seas. However, examination of specimens of C. costazii from the Atlanto-Mediterranean and Indo-Pacific regions has revealed that at least part of this material belongs to several different species (some of them new). Consequently the geographical range of C. hassallii and C. costazii is reduced. Celleporina fragilis sp. n. and Celleporina canariensis sp. n. have been confused with C. hassallii and C. costazii, respectively, due to their morphological similarity (Aristegui, 1984 b). Both species, with Celleporina labiata sp. n. and Celleporina lucida (Hincks), are commonly found in the Canaries, growing over different kinds of substrates.
