Abstract
    The early development of Pagurus bernhardus L. was studied furing a year both under laboratory conditions and by sampling the natural population from the intertidal zone at the Aber in Roscoff. Eleven or twelve stages were identified in the life cycle of the species. Morphological changes are described and illustrated. Sexual differentiation appears at the 4th or 5th stage. Females reach all definitive morphological characters prior to ripeness. Males undergo further pleopodal differentiation long after ripeness. Pagurus bernhardus is noticeably more precocious than Paguristes sericeus, but the latter has a shorter larval development.
