Abstract
    Production in experimental hatchery of the rock oyster Saccostrea cucullata echinata has been performed in French Polynesia at the Centre Oceanologique du Pacifique (Taravao, Tahiti) with a broodstock originated from New Caledonia. Hinge morphogenesis has been studied under the scanning electron microscope from the birth of the prodissoconch II denticles until their regression in the young dissoconch. These observations reveal the originality of the hinge in this species and allow to confirm the determination of the genus Saccostrea within the famility of Ostreidae. These also show that the primitive hinge of Saccostrea is very close of that of Ostrea, and that they are at a near place in the filiation of Ostreidae.
