Abstract
Diophrys scutum inhabiting a lenitic sand flat on the east side of the island of Sylt (German North Sea coast) was characterized by its horizontal and vertical distribution on the beach in correlation with temperature, oxygen and redox potential, sediment composition and grain size, content of organic particles, salinity and pH, and by its tolerance of low and high temperatures ( -- 4 to 35 degree C). Under normoxic (100 percent saturation) and oligoxic (8 percent saturation) conditions. D. scutum shows different patterns of distribution at the sand flat caused by the seasonally vertically fluctuating "redox potential discontinuity" (RPD) layer.
