| Abstract |
M. platensis has a free larval stage. The mean diameter of mature ovocytes for two reproductive periods was 70 and 68 m respectively, and the mean diameter of Prodissoconch I is 84 m. The diameter of Prodissoconch II varies with respect to environmental and biotic conditions, between 303 and 424 m (metamorphosis size). The mean value of Prodissoconch II sizes varied between 330 and 351 m. Some larvae showed a slightly formed Dissoconch and might be indicating that pelagic life could continue beyond metamorphosis, which could increase the probability of larvae finding an appropriate substrate on which to settle. Recruitment depends on many factors. The colonization of M. platensis is frequently achieved on a large scale, on filamentous or corded-like substrates, such as hydrozoans and colonial tunicates. The recruitment on adult banks of mussels is seriously affected by predation. |
