Abstract
Juvenile Crangon (MW: 32 mg) have been reared for 4 months in small sand-bottomed tanks with no substrate. Cannibalism is lower in sand-bottomed tanks during the first experimental month but at the end of the experiment, the mean rates of mortality were 40 and 66%, depending upon the number of shrimps per tank, and not really upon the presence or absence of sand. On the other hand, Crangon grows much better in the sand-bottomed tanks than in the others. The rate of length increment is 136 and 153% (-S), 187 and 193% (+S) The daily wt gain, for the 4-month period, is equal to 5.25 mg and 5.8 mg with sand compared to 2.7 mg and 3.5 mg without sand. Besides reproduction, Crangon seems adversely affected when its natural substratum is lacking. The importance of a sand-bottom in long term rearing experiments with Crangon is discussed. The trophic contribution of the meiofauna has been approached.
