Abstract
    Lab rearing of M. galloprovincialis has provided the opportunity for a detailed study of shell and hinge morphogenesis, a useful basis for the understanding of phylogeny. Shell development was found to be analogous to that observed in other bivalves. Hinge formation on the other hand exhibits fundamental differences in M. galloprovincialis compared to other bivalves.
