| Abstract |
The author describes the morphology of the derma-skeleton of the head of A. physodes comparing it with other spp of the same order, already studied by other authors. The most remarkable peculiarities of the cephalic capsule of this sp are: (1) a considerable development of the deflected lobe of the frons which produces a wide separation of antennules and antennae of the right and left side, which are placed laterally to the epistome, rather than anteriorly to it: such a condition is unusual in Crustacea; (2) the paragnati lacking of a distinct skeletal apparatus, as described for other Isopoda; (3) the presence of a pair of paramandibular sclerites, never described up to now in the other spp of Crustacea, situated ventrally to the head between the base of the mandible and the sternal lamina; (4) various particular endoskeletal formations have been found, among which the most remarkable are the ventral cephalic apodeme (large tendinous plate situated along the intermaxillary arm in correspondence with the intermaxillary pouch) and the tergal apodeme (tegumentary invaginations situated on the bottom of the postcranial sulcus). |
